AUTOMATON (2016) DRAWING, SCULPTURE, PERFORMANCE
A special performance installation for gallery Sarah Scout Presents, Melbourne, Automaton is an ongoing installation of human movement, kinetic sculptures and live drawing. The work responds to the increased use of systematised interfaces in our personal and working lives as the performers respond with precise and intricate movement to the demands of the installation’s predetermined systems and sculptural apparatus.
Performing continually throughout the exhibition’s opening hours, the dancer’s required labour mirrors the demands once made of analogue office work within the Victor Horsley Chambers; now home to Sarah Scout Presents. Reinterpreting the site's former use, the interrelationship between the body and the automated, gestural expression and regulated action is enacted throughout the exhibition.
